A Student's Guide to Self Storage

If you’re a student at university, you’ll find that you may move around a bit between student housing, rent shares and halls of residence - especially if you’re an overseas student. Self storage for students is a great way to keep your things safe between term times or houses - for very little cost!

If you are mid course and Summer is fast-approaching you are bound to be moving house again - but don’t suffer the pain of bringing all your stuff back home for just a few weeks (your parents won’t thank you!). Use self storage instead. It’s much cheaper than paying for your accommodation when you are not there!

No matter whether you need to keep a few bags safe for a couple of nights, or suitcases and boxes secure for the entire summer holiday, self storage is the simple and affordable answer for all students..

So how do you find the right self storage? How much does it cost? Do you get a student discount?

Read on - we can answer all your questions!

1. Do you actually need self storage?

Student rental and tenancy agreements will vary landlord to landlord - some will have rules against storing anything in their properties over Summer, even though you are paying rent, whilst others will not start their contracts until term begins. And even if you are able to stay in uni halls for a second year, you will probably still have to move your possessions out over the Summer holidays.

If this is the case - self storage is the most hassle-free option that you can choose to store your items safely. It instantly saves the stress for domestic students on packing everything up and somehow squeezing it in to the car, whilst international students can save lots of money by using self storage instead of paying to ship stuff back home, only to bring it back in September.

If you are in Exeter, Edinburgh or Oxford - check out our dedicated Student Storage services.

2. How much does self storage cost?

Prices do differ around the country but our storage units can cost as little as £4.99 per week - and that’s a price that is hard to beat! It also depends on how much space you need to keep your things in and for how long. Plus if you show your NUS card you’ll get a further 10% off!

In Exeter, Edinburgh and Oxford - we offer a dedicated student storage service where we will collect your bag(s) from your Halls of Residence or student accommodation and deliver it to store. To return it once you are back at university.

3. How to get cheaper self storage

Although our self storage is pretty affordable as it is, there are lots of ways that you can save your pennies… here are few top tips to get the best student discount:

  1. Show your TOTUM/NUS card, as proof of your student status, it is bound to give you a further discount

  2. Share with a friend and that way you can half the cost of the storage unit. (One of you will have to take ownership for the unit).

  3. Ask for an upper-level storage unit as these can sometimes be cheaper than ground floor.

  4. If you want to use the storage for a longer length of time you can get a better rate - normally 50% off for the first 8 weeks (EASE50).

  5. Ask for advice on how much space you actually need to rent so that you don’t waste money on thin air - our friendly staff have loads of experience and have all been a student at some point in their lives!
