Top 3 Tips for a Successful Self Store Experience

No matter the reason you are looking for self storage - whether you are planning on moving, building an extension or just need some extra space at home - it is always a good idea to do a little pre-planning before your deliver anything to your self store unit.

Here our 3 Top Tips to ensure that your self storage experience is a success from the start…

Top Tip # 1
Create an Inventory or List of the Items You Intend to Store

This may sound a little obvious, but it is amazing at how many customers contact Ease the Squeeze for a price when they actually have no idea of what they are intending to store. Simply by taking 5 minutes to sit down and make a list of what you would like to place in store, you will easily be able to see how much storage pace you will require and allow us to give you the most accurate quote for your storage. Plus, we’ll be able to advise on how many packing boxes and wrapping materials you may need.

Writing an inventory will also help you to see whether everything needs to go in to store in the first place. For example, you may discover items that you simply no longer need or want but you will be much better to donating them to charity, or selling them via an online auction site, then paying to store them.

Plus when you need something from your storage unit, you will have a list to rely on to know where it is!

Top Tip #2
Label Your Packing Boxes Clearly

When using self storage you want to make sure that smaller items are safely stored in a sturdy box that is strong enough to be stacked for a long period of time. We aim to help at Ease the Squeeze by having a range of professional grade packing boxes on hand to buy, as well as lots of protective packaging such as wrapping paper, bubble wrap and tape.

Once your box is packed, you want to make sure that they are all labelled clearly - and sensibly. Try to keep similar objects together and label the box as so - ie “Pots and Pans” for your cooking pots and saucepans or “Lego” for all those plastic bricks! (You get the idea!).

You can then cross reference your packed boxes with you the storage list you have written.

And last of all, remember to stack only lighter boxes on heavier ones to avoid any crushing incidents - read our blog post on Top Packing Tips for an Organised Self Storage Unit for more help with this.

Top Tip #3
Disassemble Large Items

This can be a really useful way of gaining extra space in you storage unit. Taking the feet off that large sofa or disassembling the bed frame or dining table can not only make the item easier to transport, but also make it easier to stack in to your storage unit.

However, please be aware that not all flatpack furniture is designed to be disassembled as this can weaken their structure. If this is the case with your wardrobe or cupboard, leave it assembled but stack your storage inside it so you do no waste space.

Remember our specially trained removal men can help with any of your storage collection or delivery needs, as well as packing - just ask for a quote.

We hope that you agree with us that these 3 top tips are easy to follow and easy to follow, ensuring that you have a successful self storage experience from start to finish!
